NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for a Baton Rouge man they believe is connected to a homicide that happened on St. Charles Avenue in early January.

According to a report issued by NOPD, Garret James Ward is wanted in connection to the homicide of Arnold Jackson that happened in the 2000 block of St. Charles Avenue on January 6.

Around 1:33 a.m. officers responded to a call of a simple battery at the intersection of St. Charles and Josephine Street.

When officers arrived, they were flagged down by several individuals in the street.

The individuals told police that Ward punched and kicked Jackson then ran inside of an elevated parking lot.

Officers found Ward intoxicated and took him into custody.

Jackson was transported to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries on January 18.

Ward was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for second-degree battery, but was released after his court appearance.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office classified the death to be a homicide based on the injuries sustained, at which time the investigation was handed to the NOPD Homicide Division.

An arrest warrant was then obtained for Ward on a count of second-degree murder, according to the report.

Ward is believed to reside in Baton Rouge, La.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Garrett James Ward is asked to contact NOPD Homicide Detective Nicholas Williams at 504-658-5300. Citizens with information that can help solve crimes are asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.

As if there was any doubt who our No. 1 player on the countdown would be. Drew Brees may be 39, but he's still the straw that stirs the drink for the New Orleans Saints. The best to ever don the Black and Gold, signed a two-year contract this offseason with the club. Extending his career just a couple of more seasons. 2018 could be historic year for Brees.
