Sheriff: Man tries to crush deputy, holds 2 at gunpoint

IUKA, Miss. (AP) - A man is accused of hitting a Mississippi deputy with his Jeep Wrangler and preventing two people from calling police by holding them at gunpoint.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal of Tupelo reports 32-year-old Samuel Jacob Rice is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and kidnapping. Tishomingo County Sheriff John Daugherty says Rice fled from law enforcement last Friday, hitting a game warden's car and attempting to hit an officer before hitting a deputy. Officers shot at the Jeep, but Rice didn't surrender. Rice's Jeep was found nearby with a wounded female inside. Police found him later that day holding two people in an apartment.

Additional charges may be filed. It's unclear if Rice has a lawyer.
