Coroner releases identity of child killed in Covington parking lot

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - A 7-year-old boy died following a traffic incident that occurred Thursday morning at a Covington area shopping center.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies were called to The Shoppes Nord du Lac shopping center on Highway 21 near Covington around 10:30 a.m. in reference to a child being struck by a motorist.

When they arrived on scene, deputies discovered a 7-year-old boy had been struck by a pick-up truck in the back-northeast corner of the parking lot.

The child, identified as Bryant Sun, of Covington, was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. An autopsy will be performed on Friday.

Circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.

A memorial was growing Thursday afternoon for Sun right in front of the restaurant that his parents own.

Also in front of that restaurant, was sidewalk chalk. A witness said the boy was drawing there just minutes before the tragic accident happened.

"The father is not doing very good, the mom is stable but yes this is their only son," said the family friend. "I cannot say too much about what is going on but they are devastated. So, we cannot believe it either."

As is standard protocol involving traffic fatalities, a standardized field sobriety test was administered and the driver, 32-year-old Nathaniel Fornea of Madisonville, voluntarily submitted to a blood alcohol screening. Impairment is not suspected, and no citations have been issued.
