After Further Review: Breaking down Willie Snead's future with Saints

(WVUE) -

It wasn't just that Willie Snead had a down season in 2017, it's that it literally came from out of nowhere.  In 2015, he was well on his way to becoming one of the Saints' next great undrafted free agent gems. He had 69 receptions for 984 yards that year. In 2016, he had 72 receptions for 895 yards. Much was expected from Snead in 2017.

But then the bottom fell out.

Snead began the season serving a suspension, but once he returned he was never himself. He caught all of eight passes in the regular season and had a complete shift in body language. The chip on his shoulder that fueled his '15 and '16 seasons was replaced with a lost look in '17.

Like Delvin Breaux, Snead enters the offseason as a restricted free agent, meaning the Saints can tender him with a one-year deal. The hope would be that Snead can find his mojo and return to the form of his previous two seasons at a relatively low cost. But unlike Breaux, who battled multiple injuries, Snead's steep dropoff remains a mystery. There's no real explanation for it other than he simply did not play well.

The Saints are thin at wide receiver behind Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn, Jr. They could bring Snead back or they could move on without him.

Bringing him back would have been a no-brainer just one year ago, but now that decision feels a bit more complicated to make.

Drew Brees is entering his 18th year in the NFL. Which, would usually mean a players career is on the tail end, but for Brees that is not the case. He works out year around, and still has a lot of tread left on those tires. "I think early on you feel like you're pretty invincible you're young, you can wake up every day and go Mach 3 with your hair on fire and you don't really think twice. I think as you get older, as you have more experience and you begin to become a bit more in...more>>
