"The forecast indicates the river will get up to that 1.2 million cubic feet per second," said Matt Roe with the Army Corps of Engineers.

It's the magic number that means the Army Corps of Engineers must open the spillway.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have decided to open the Bonnet Carré Spillway Thursday at 10:00 a.m. They will operate the spillway for roughly three weeks.

The operation of the spillway will help prevent flooding in the city.
