NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A 32-year-old man confessed to police that he killed his 73-year-old grandmother, according to a report by our partners NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.
The New Orleans Police Department found the woman, later identified by the coroner as Beverly Wilkerson, shot dead and wrapped in plastic inside her Little Woods home on Sunday.
According to the report, police arrested Ernest Richardson and booked him on a charge of second-degree murder.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office on Monday identified the woman who was killed as Beverly Wilkerson.
According to the report, the warrant stated that someone called police from a location in Uptown's Milan neighborhood and said there was a man there who said "that he had killed his grandmother."
Officers went to Marengo Street where Richardson was located, and at the same time other officers went to the Brookfield address and discovered Wilkerson's body, according to the report.
The report said Richardson "confessed to shooting Beverly Wilkerson, and subsequently wrapping her body in plastic inside her residence during the early morning hours of Sunday."
Also found on Marengo Street was a 2008 silver Toyota Camry. According to the report, officers later learned the car belonged to Wilkerson.
Richardson later told police that he took his grandmother's car from her home Sunday morning.
Richardson was scheduled to appear in Orleans Parish Magistrate Court Monday and bond information was not immediately available.
