NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Charles Neville, one of the founding brothers of the iconic band Neville Brothers, has died at 79.

Neville is the father of Charmaine Neville.

Family members said he died Thursday morning from complications related to cancer on Thursday.

"I've had the pleasure of working with the Neville's even before they called themselves the Neville Brothers," Grammy Award winning singer Irma Thomas said. "Working with them back in the 60's. He's always been a very nice person to work with and eager to get the job done. He was a dedicated musician and he loved what he did and he loved his family."

Aaron Neville said that if we would have had the choice of picking his brothers, it would have been Charlie.

"You were a great brother. You'll always be in my heart and soul, like a tattoo," Aaron Neville, a four-time platinum record winner said.

In 1989, the Neville Brothers were honored with a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Healing Chant."

The band was also nominated for Grammy Awards in 1996 and 1999.

Charlie Neville was known for his smooth saxophone style and his smile that did not seem to fade.
