ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a crash in St. Charles Parish that left a Houma man dead. The accident occurred Saturday, just after 2 p.m. on Highway 90 west, near mile post 239.2. The deceased victim has been identified as 41-year-old Maurice Stewart.
According to police, Stewart was driving an SUV in the right lane on Hwy 90 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle rotated counter-clockwise and crossed the median. The vehicle eventually came to rest in the left lane of Hwy 90 east.
Stewart was pronounced dead on the scene. The passenger inside the vehicle, identified as 36-year-old Schwann Williams, also of Houma, was brought to University Medical Center in stable condition.
It is unknown if impairment played a role in the crash, however speed is believed to have been a factor. A toxicology test will be performed during an autopsy. Investigators report that both individuals did have their belts on at the time of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
