(WVUE) -

The Saints are moving on from tight end Coby Fleener, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. His release is not a big surprise. The Saints signed Fleener to a five-year, $35 million contract in 2016. His play never matched up with that lofty price tag.

Fleener finished with just 22 receptions and three touchdowns in 2017. He finished the season on injured reserve after suffering a vicious concussion in week 12 in Los Angeles.

The Saints signed Ben Watson in the offseason and also have Josh Hill and Michael Hoomanawanui on the roster. There's no official word if Fleener's release will have a post-June 1st designation.
