NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Watch out for scams in Livingston Parish, the sheriff's office says.

The alleged scammer calls residents and says they have missed a court appearance, then tells them there will be a warrant issued for the victim's arrest.

"Now, in order to 'make things right', the scammer tells the 'target' that money – and lots of it – is required.  It appears – at least at this point – that the scammer is targeting those who work day jobs," the sheriff's office said.

The LPSO stresses:

  • The LPSO will not call to inform you of a missed court appearance, notify you of an active warrant and then attempt to cut a monetary deal.
  • The LPSO does not accept payments in the form of gift cards or money grams.
  • Call the LPSO at (225) 686-2241, if you’re unsure.

"We have received multiple reports of this scam targeting hard-working individuals in our parish.  Our detectives are investigating," the sheriff's office said.
