Alex Okafor ready to help rookie Marcus Davenport

(WVUE) -

Alex Okafor ruptured his Achilles tendon in mid-November of 2017 but that didn't stop the Saints from re-signing him in March of 2018 to a 2-year deal. The team's faith in Okafor's recovery is being justified by the defensive end stating that he expects to be back for the start of training camp.

Despite Okafor's speedy recovery, the Saints did elect to draft fellow pass rusher Marcus Davenport with the 14th overall selection, putting the pressure on Okafor to perform, or be replaced.

He is taking the new addition in stride.

"He's a Texas kid so he's starting off high on the Totem Pole already. He looks like a freak. Everything I hear about him, looks like the physicals aren't going to be an issue so he just has to come in and be ready to go and I think he'll be alright. All you can do is try to give him what older guys gave me. Tell him how this league is, help him with the playbook, any questions he has. Answer those questions honestly, just lead by example and that's what I plan on doing," Okafor said.

Davenport will make his Saints debut this weekend as the team holds rookie minicamp in Metairie.

Alvin Kamara did it all last season for Sean Payton's offense, and that's why he's No. 2 on our ranking the Saints countdown. Kamara burst onto the scene, mesmerized saints fans, and the entire NFL with his unique running style. His stat line, amazing: 728 yards rushing, averaged over six yards per carry, with  eight touchdowns. He also added 81 catches with five touchdowns. All the while playing just 45 percent of the Saints offensive snaps. Kamara ran away with the NFL's Off...more>>
