JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

The Jefferson Parish Fire Department is asking the public to stop throwing their lit cigarettes from their cars.

According to fire officials in the parish, the fire department responded to 14 grass fires in a five hour period on Friday that were started by lit cigarettes.

Conditions are dry and hot in the area.

Smokers are urged to place their cigarettes in an ashtray to avoid accidentally causing a grass fire.
