A Broadmoor homeowner who bought a chair lift for her elderly mother turned to the FOX 8 Defenders for help after it wouldn't work properly.
At 94 years old, Gloria Baker is full of life but can't move around like she used to.
“I love flowers in the yard and I miss that,” Gloria Baker said.
Gloria's daughter and primary caregiver, Leslie, says her mom can't navigate the steep steps outside their home any longer.
“To see her on her hands and knees going down the steps, it was just too much, you know?” Leslie said.
So Leslie purchased a lift to carry Gloria down to the first floor. Last November, she bought the $8,000 piece of machinery from Island Lift Systems. That company was a distributor for Legacy Lifts. Days after having it was installed, Leslie says, the lift stopped working.
“The worst thing anybody can do in any way, is hinder me from taking care of her,” Leslie said.
Calling Island Lift for help, Leslie says all she heard was excuse after excuse.
“First it was Thanksgiving, then Christmas, and New Years, then the part was on back order from Germany, then it snowed, I could go on and on and on,” Leslie said.
Frustrated and thousands of dollars paid without a workable lift, she turned to the FOX 8 Defenders.
“FOX 8 called the people who actually make the elevator, Legacy Lifts, and Legacy Lifts sent somebody out and repaired it,” Leslie said.
We called Island Lift for comment. We were told they tried to put Leslie Baker into contact with Legacy for repair help, a claim Leslie disputes. Legacy Lifts says it severed its ties with Island Lift as a distributor last November, the same month Leslie purchased her product.
Legacy Lifts also apologized to Leslie. She says she's just grateful the lift is now fixed, so her mom can experience a little bit of freedom again, and a little bit of fun.
“If she wants to go see a second line, she should be able to go do it,” Leslie said.
Baker says it took about four months from the time the lift was purchased to the time it was fully repaired. Baker says without the FOX 8 Defenders, she doesn't think it would even be working today.
