NOPD: Man sought in Algiers carjacking later arrested after shooting at pregnant girlfriend

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - NOPD officers arrested a man accused of stealing a SUV and then shooting at his pregnant girlfriend.

Officers said while searching for the stolen SUV, they got another call about a domestic disturbance which they said led them straight to the suspect.

Police arrested 38-year-old Leroy Garrett for carjacking and domestic aggravated burglary. Investigators said they confiscated four firearms found on him.

About 9:30 a.m., officers went to check out a report of a carjacking in the 3500 block of General Meyer Avenue. At 10:12 a.m., officers got a call about a domestic aggravated burglary in the 9600 block of Hayne Boulevard.

Police said Garrett stole a blue Ford Explorer in Algiers and drove to his pregnant girlfriend's apartment in New Orleans East.

They said Garrett fired a shot at the victim but missed.

Neighbors called the incident unnerving.

"It's kind of scary because I always stayed in these apartments so I'm not used to like violence and stuff going on, but I hope that doesn't happen again," Arrianne Phipps said.

Ed Rosa witnessed the arrest just a block over.

"I was like in awe. Like, I couldn't believe it. Like, you know, I mean who shoots at a pregnant woman even to begin with you know, who shoots at a woman period," Rosa said.

NOPD said no one was hurt and Garrett is being treated at a hospital for possible drug intake.

They say officers will book Garrett after he gets out of the hospital.
