METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - An East Jefferson High School student was arrested Friday for having a stolen gun on school grounds, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto.
At approximately 1:43 p.m., a coach at the school saw 17-year-old Liroy Friloux inside the gym where he was not supposed to be, according to Lopinto. A school administrator asked Friloux if he was in possession of any contraband. Friloux said that he had hid something outside and asked if he could go get it.
The administrator escorted Friloux outside, where she saw him retrieve a handgun that was hidden inside a garbage can.
Friloux fled from the building with the handgun, Lopinto said. The JPSO school resource deputy saw Friloux running through the court yard and chased him. Friloux was quickly caught and the handgun was located in the 4500 block of Camel Street in Metairie. Lopinto said the firearm was a small caliber semi-automatic handgun that was reported stolen from another jurisdiction.
Friloux will be booked with possession of a firearm on school grounds, possession of a stolen firearm and resisting arrest.
"We would like to reiterate that we will take any threat of violence made toward our schools seriously. We will investigate every instance to the fullest," Lopinto said in an emailed statement. "Many of our schools have full-time resource officers on campus every day. Our children deserve to have safe schools, and in conjunction with the school system, the Sheriff's Office will do everything in its power to continue to make that a reality."
