Head-on collision leaves man dead and woman seriously injured

EDGARD, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police says one man is dead and a woman is seriously injured following a head-on collision in St. John the Baptist Parish.

The crash happened at 9 p.m. on LA 3127 near LA 640 in Edgard.

Investigators say 30-year-old Vicente Olguin was driving his 2000 Honda Accord eastbound on LA 3127 when for unknown reasons he crossed the center line and began traveling eastbound in the westbound lane. Olguin was also driving with a flat tire on the rear right side of the vehicle and without his headlights on.

A 2011 Toyota Camry driven by 19-year-old Kaitlyn Lassere was traveling westbound on LA 3127 when it encountered Olguin's vehicle on the road. Lassere attempted to swerve right out of the path of Olguin's vehicle but the two vehicles collided head-on.

Olguin, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner's Office.

Lassere, who was also wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to University Medical Center for treatment.

It is currently unknown if impairment played a factor in the crash on the part of Olguin. Standard toxicology tests are pending through the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office.

Lassere is not suspected to have been impaired at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
