PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A fatal accident was reported Sunday night in Plaquemines Parish, according to State Police.

The fatal crash happened on LA 39 south at Highway 15 by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to the report.

Deputies with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office found a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado in the canal, but were unable to locate a driver.  Deputies later found the body of the driver 100 feet from the bank. They then notified State Police.

Troopers’ initial investigation revealed that the Chevrolet was traveling south on LA 39 at a high rate of speed in a right hand curve.

According to the report, the vehicle continued straight, exited the left side of the roadway and continued approximately 475 feet before going over the tall levee.  The vehicle then became airborne before entering the Humble Canal.

The identity of the driver has not yet been determined.

Alcohol and seat belt usage is currently unknown and toxicology tests will be performed during an autopsy.  The investigation is on-going.
