Pedestrian struck and killed by vehicle in Holy Cross neighborhood, driver arrested

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The New Orleans Police Department says a pedestrian was hit and killed early Sunday morning in the Holy Cross neighborhood.

Officers responded to the call around 12:20 a.m. in the 5100 block of St. Claude Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an unidentified woman lying in the street suffering from injuries after being struck by a black Cadillac.

Investigators learned that the woman was walking across the street when she was struck by the Cadillac traveling westbound on St. Claude Ave. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver did not immediately stop following the crash but was stopped by police on the St. Claude Bridge blocks away from the scene.

The driver, who police have identified as a 32-year-old Kenan Leford, was brought to the Traffic Compound for blood and alcohol testing. He has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and hit and run driving.

Police are withholding the name of the victim pending family notification and the completion of an autopsy. The victim's name will be released by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office along with an official cause of death.

The crash remains under investigation.
