Victim in fatal Airline Drive accident extricated by Jaws of Life

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The New Orleans Police Department worked a fatal accident on Airline Drive and Tulane Avenue Memorial Day morning.

At approximately 4:52 a.m. NOPD Traffic Fatality Investigators responded to a car crash under the elevated portion of Interstate-10 West at the Airline Drive exit. Upon arrival they discovered a white Dodge Ram pickup truck, occupied by the 53-year-old male driver.

According to NOPD, the 53-year-old victim was traveling on I-10 west and was exiting on the Airline Dr/Tulane Ave ramp when he hit the left guardrail.

The White Didge Ram veered to the right when it flipped over the right guardrail, landing upside down, according to police.

According to police, EMS used the Jaws of Life to extract the man's body from the vehicle.

The victim is a black male, but his identity has not yet been released.

Police say an autopsy will need to be performed to determine any impairment.
