As expected, the Pelicans extended head coach Alvin Gentry’s contract, according to a report from ESPN.
His new deal will take him through the 2020-21 season.
With 48 wins and a playoff series victory over the Trail Blazers this year, the team comes off its most successful season since 2008-09. So it should be no surprise to see Gentry receive an extension.
However, this deal is bigger than a “reward” for last year’s success. The Pelicans are handing Gentry the keys to the team during one of the franchise’s most pivotal stretches.
The Pelicans seem to be on the right path toward building a contender, and they’ve chosen Gentry to execute that vision. He’ll also oversee the prime years of superstar Anthony Davis and the re-established Jrue Holiday.
Now we’ll have to wait and see if starting point guard Rajon Rondo and center DeMarcus Cousins return to New Orleans as well.
