NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A New Orleans East man has been charged for opening fire on a boater.

According to NOPD, Paul Schmit discharged a weapon at the boater in the 2100 block of Paris Road.

The victim said he was traveling at a low speed through Bevineau Water Channel when Schmit began yelling and cursing at him to slow down, according to the report.

The victim told Schmit that he was not going fast.

The victim told police he docked his boat at a friend's house to make a sale before heading back down the Bevineau Water Channel, towards the area where Schmit's boat was docked.

As the victim approached the area, police say Schmit stood on his boat and shot a black semi-automatic weapon at the victim, striking the water in front of the victim's boat.

During the course of the investigation, Schmit admitted to firing one round from his handgun at the victim.

Schmit was transported to the Orleans Parish Justice Center, where he was booked for aggravated assault with a firearm.

Anyone with any additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact Seventh District detectives at 504-658-6070.
