MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

For the first time since his son's death, we are hearing from Memphis wrestling legend Jerry “The King” Lawler.

On his podcast, Jerry described the most difficult week of his life and said he has doubts about the official cause of Brian Christopher Lawler's death.

He was emotional and honest while speaking publicly for the first time since his son Brian Christopher Lawler was found hanging in his Hardeman County Jail cell last month.

Lawler opened up about losing his son and said he believes there's more to his death than meets the eye.

“It's like you're suddenly living a nightmare,” Lawler said.

He said his son, who wrestled as Grandmaster Sexay during his time in the WWE, was arrested July 7 in his driveway in Bolivar. Officers accused him of driving under the influence.

Ted Hansom, attorney for the Lawler family, said the death certificate says Brian Christopher's death was caused by loss of oxygen to the brain from hanging. The cause of death is listed as a suicide.

Lawler said Hardeman County Sheriff John Doolen assured him Brian would be safe.

“He said, ‘Jerry, my jail is going to be the best place for Brian for the next few weeks,’” Jerry recalled. “He said, ‘I'll personally keep an eye on him and he'll be safe here.’”

Saturday, July 28, Lawler got a call informing him that Brian was found hanging in his jail cell. Brian was hospitalized and passed away the next day.

Lawler got emotional describing his son's last moments.

“I held his hand and...his heart stopped beating,” Jerry said.

Brian was laid to rest Friday, Aug. 3

Unable to get into the details, Lawler expressed doubts that Brian attempted suicide. He said he's even received calls from other inmates.

“My attorney just looked this and just said...his exact words were, ‘Jerry this doesn't pass the smell test. Something seems not right about this whole thing,’” Lawler said.

He went on to say the family is waiting for the investigation into Brian's death to wrap up before saying more.

In the meantime, the King is still mourning.

“You know if you got a kid, tell them you love them, because I didn't do that enough with Brian,” Lawler said.

The TBI is still investigating.
