Lakeview blight could be addressed by council

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans City Council members could take up a blight concern that the FOX 8 Defenders detailed in a series of reports.

Councilman Joe Giarrusso said the Governmental Affairs Committee will discuss code enforcement rules when it comes to swimming pools.

Over the last year the FOX 8 Defenders showed longtime nuisance property in Lakeview with a disturbing health and safety hazard in the back yard.

"The homeowner has rights, and we respect that. But we should not have to live next to that disgusting pool," said Brigette Starr.

The pool is dark and stagnant. Neighbors worry about the safety of area children and the risk of West Nile Virus.

The Vicksburg Street property has been in the blight system for more than eight years, yet it's never been remediated.

The committee meets at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning in council chambers.
