NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A man’s body was found in a well in the Gentilly area Saturday night (Oct. 6), according to New Orleans police.
The man was “sitting upright,” at the bottom of a well near the intersection of Florida Avenue and Gibson Street, NOPD. According to the New Orleans Fire Department, a pedestrian looking for firewood found the body around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. The man said he looked into the well and discovered the body after he saw flies and smelled an odor in the area, NOFD said in a news release.
NOFD described the well as being about three or four feet wide and roughly eight feet deep.
Fire department personal removed the body from the well and EMS pronounced him dead on the scene, according to NOFD.
As of Sunday afternoon, the man’s identity and cause of death had not been determined. It was not immediately clear if police suspect foul play.
