Causeway awards contract to reinforce bridge railing

Causeway General Manager says higher guard rails would have prevented tragedy

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Causeway Commission will award a contract to a Baton Rouge company to strengthen the southbound railings on the Causeway Bridge.

JB James Construction LLC came in with the lowest bid of $33.6 million.

Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and should take more than a year to complete.

Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said crews will only work at night on weekdays.

Other bidders included Archer Western Construction of Chicago, C.E.C. Inc of Lafayette, Boh Bros. Construction of New Orleans, Command Construction of Metairie and J. Caldarera of LaPlace.

The work will reinforce railings to help prevent vehicles from plunging into Lake Pontchartrain.
