NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A St. Bernard Parish correctional officer charged with violating the civil rights of an inmate that resulted in her death, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Sheriff James Pohlmann.

Andre Dominick was taken to an area hospital on Thursday, the sheriff said. His condition is unknown.

Dominick and three others are accused of knowing that inmate Nimali Henry had serious medical needs and failed to provide her with necessary medical attention.

She died in April 2014.

The trial for the defendants started this week.

An investigation into the self-inflicted gunshot is ongoing.
