NOPD: Suspect accidentally shoots self after wounding man, boy in Treme

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The NOPD has arrested a 17-year-old suspect in a Treme shooting that injured a man and a child on Jan. 9.

First District detectives were dispatched to West Jefferson Hospital on Thursday (Jan. 10) to talk to a subject suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The teen told officers that he shot himself in the 2600 block of Dumaine Street the previous night. Detectives said he matched the description of the perpetrator involved in the shooting in the 2600 block of Dumaine Street that wounded a 19-year-old and a 9-year-old.

During questioning, police said the subject, Rontrell Keller, admitted to shooting both victims. Based on his admission and evidence from the scene, detectives secured an arrest warrant for Keller for two counts of aggravated battery.

During a search of Keller’s home, detectives located a .9mm Smith and Wesson handgun believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.
