NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -T he mayor of Atlanta wants Saints fans to know – she was joking.

At a press conference about Super Bowl security, she addressed her comments about wanting anyone but the Saints to make it to the big game.

Those led to a social media firestorm that spread through the four corners of the remaining NFL playoffs, including Kansas City, Los Angeles and New England.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said the comments were a lighthearted jab at the Falcons’ heated rivals.

“When we planned this press conference, I did not know we would need extra security because of the New Orleans fans I seem to have offended. So, before we get to the real stuff, I want to just say it was a joke. But I don’t know of a Falcons fan who wants to see the Saints in the Super Bowl. With that being said, we are so very thankful for all of those who come to Atlanta to enjoy the Super Bowl,” she said.

She said the city is honored to host the championship game and any fans who plan on visiting Atlanta.

Super Bowl LIII will be played on Feb. 3.
