Dunn, a Baton Rouge native and former NFL player, graduated from Catholic High in 1993. He later founded the Warrick Dunn Charities in memory of his mother. Dunn has partnered with Habitat for Humanity numerous times throughout the years to help struggling families. This presentation marks the 20th home Dunn has helped furnish and the 168th home completed through his Home for the Holidays program.
The single mother from Plaquemine, Gabrielle, is now a homeowner thanks to these organizations. She worked on the home alongside volunteers from Catholic High.
Along with furniture and appliances from Aaron’s, Dunn’s organization is also providing down payment assistance for the new homeowner in the amount of $5,000.
Gabby and her two boys say they will never forget this moment. “I’m so lost for words. Thank you and thank everybody,” she said.
The single mother was literally speechless as she arrived at their new home. After getting the keys, the family of three got the chance to take a tour of their new space. It was an unexpected blessing Gabby says not only moves them to a safer neighborhood, but opens up a world of new possibilities for her boys.
“It’s a dream come true,” she said. “I’m excited, I’m emotional and trying to hold back, but I’m happy.”
Her happiness did not just stop at a new home. Every inch of the place, from the kitchen to her sons’ bedrooms and even the laundry room were all fully stocked with just about everything you can imagine. Gabby calls the gift overwhelming and emotional. Dunn has another word for it though.
“It’s a wonderful experience,” said Dunn. “Each time that we’re able to hand the keys over and walk through a home, it’s life-changing.”
He says coming home and giving back in his own community just never quite gets old.
“This is where it all started for me, so I’m always going to come back home and going to help families that are trying to help themselves,” said Dunn.
While some may take it for granted, the true beauty of the moment and the promise of homeownership is something this mother says her family will cherish for a lifetime.
“It’s a blessing, so who wouldn’t be happy for it?” said Gabby.
The mother was able to sign her closing documents and was able to move in Tuesday evening.
