NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -A Metairie firefighter who was injured over the weekend battling a fire at an apartment complex is receiving widespread support from his community.

The fire broke out at the DeLimon Place Condos in Old Metairie Saturday evening.

Dan Ziegler was assisting the interior team fighting the fire when he fell through the roof of the building. He was pulled from the fire and transported to University Medical Center where he is currently being treated for second and third-degree burns.

A GoFundMe account was created for Ziegler, and it has now reached $27,000.

Jefferson Parish East Bank Fire Chief Dave Tibbet said 30 units were affected by the fire, smoke or water damage. Nearly 100 residents have been displaced.

“We ask for continued prayers for Dan Ziegler and his family and thank all of our firefighters for putting their lives on the line every time they get a call,” said Chief Tibbets. “I also want to thank the doctors and medical staff at UMC for taking great care of Dan.”
