NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A 15-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen while trying to burglarize a car in New Orleans East early Tuesday (Feb. 19) , according to New Orleans police.

The teen told police he was shot around 12: 40 a.m. in the 7300 block of West Renaissance Court by someone inside a dark-colored van that he saw driving in the area earlier that evening. The boy said he could not identify the shooter, police said, but told investigators he also had a gun at the time.

Police said the he was arrested last month on a possession of stolen property charge after he was found with a 2008 BMW earlier that night. Last May, the teen was arrested one criminal damages to property charges after he was accused of punching holes in the walls and breaking a table at his home, NOPD said.

As of Wednesday evening, the teen remained in the hospital for treatment, but NOPD said investigators are seeking a warrant for his arrest on an illegal possession of a firearm charge.
