NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A two-vehicle crash closed the Causeway Bridge in both directions Monday evening (April 22), according to a Causeway Police spokesman.
UPDATE: The bridge was reopened shortly before 7 p.m.
The spokesman said the accident was reported shortly before 6 p.m. on the southbound bridge. One of the vehicles caught fire, the spokesman said, but no one was inside the car at the time of the blaze. The fire was put out around 6:30 p.m., but the bridge remained closes as workers cleared the accident.
Two people were brought to the hospital. As of 6:30 p.m., their conditions were unknown, but the spokesman said he did not believe their injuries were life-threatening.
All lanes of the bridge were closed as soon as the crash was reported, according to the spokesman, which he said it standard protocol to make room for emergency responders.
