NOPD Homicide Investigation in the French Quarter

Bourbon St. restaurant mourns loss of waitress killed in shooting

NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) - New Orleans Police officers have made an arrest after a homicide in the French Quarter.

Police say shortly after midnight Thursday, officers got a call of a shooting in the 900 block of Bourbon St. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the face.

The victim worked at the Clover Grill, according to witnesses. Family members have identified the woman as Shay De Saint Germain.

She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

The NOPD arrested Alexander Kirby, 33, in connection with the killing. Kirby was taken into custody at the scene by Louisiana State Police. and French Quarter Task Force officers. He has been described as De Saint Germain’s ex-boyfriend.

Kirby was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm.

Darlene Jacobs, the attorney for Wood Enterprises, which owns Clover Grill, said the victim was working with her current boyfriend when Kirby came to the restaurant and got into an argument.

The scuffle moved to the courtyard, when others tried to break up the fight. Eventually, a gun went off, hitting De Saints Germain in the face.

Her friends honored her with a makeshift memorial at the restaurant.

“I made myself wear glitter today because she was glitter and rainbows all the time. She was the best friend anyone could ask for. She’d give you the shirt off her back,” friend Linday Kennedy said.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

“A team member and one of our own lost her life this morning due to a senseless and devastating act. She was full of life, headstrong, and truly cared for everyone she surrounded herself by,” a co-worker said on social media.

Clover Grill was temporarily closed on Thursday, as people started a makeshift memorial for the woman.

The owners are working with the family on funeral arrangements.
