NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) -The NOPD is investigating a shooting by officers that left an armed man dead in a New Orleans East apartment complex Friday morning in the 6800 Block of Parc Brittany Boulevard.
"I heard it like right in my ear… I was awakened to at least eight to ten gunshots,” said a woman who did not want her name used.
She said her three-year-old nephew heard the harrowing sounds, too.
"My nephew was inside with me and he ran, he was in the living room playing with toys and he ran into the bedroom and was saying Tee, Tee, they’re shooting, they’re shooting and he jumped into the bed with me because he was so scared,” stated the resident.
The gunfire involved three New Orleans police officers who responded to a complaint of aggravated assault.
"Today unfortunately, an individual lost their life with a police involved shooting,” said New Orleans Police Supt. Shaun Ferguson.
He said 7th District officers responded to a call around 10 a.m.
"Upon their arrival they encountered an individual armed with a weapon at which time shots were fired. The individual that was armed with a weapon sustained multiple gunshot wounds and expired on scene. Three of the responding officers did fire their weapons,” said Ferguson.
Evidence markers on the scene suggest numerous shots were fired. Investigators are looking into who fired the first shots.
"Trying to investigate and determine who shot first,” Ferguson stated.
A witness paid attention to the pattern of the shots.
"It stopped and then they started shooting again, you could tell because either they were shooting a lot, or they were shooting at each other because of how many bullets it was, and it stopped and then the guns sounded different,” said the woman.
The name of the dead man has not been released. No officers were hurt.
