NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) - Causeway Police have reopened the southbound lanes of the Causeway following a fatal crash Wednesday afternoon.
The crash took place minutes after Causeway Police cleared an earlier crash that closed the northbound lanes.
According to Causeway officials, they received a call around 2 p.m. about a stalled vehicle four miles from the Southshore. While Causeway Police were on the phone with the driver, they heard another vehicle crash into the stalled vehicle.
The driver of the stalled vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
“There will be 180 crashes on the bridge this year almost annually and a third of those will result from breakdowns on the bridge that happen within the first two minutes while they’re waiting to get there. Those are the ones that usually have the most injuries because the impact is so hard and quick. That’s why it’s so important that if you have a breakdown on the bridge keep going until you get to one of the emergency stopping areas,” says Causeway Commissioner Carlton Dufrechou.
Causeway Police reopened the southbound lanes just before 5 p.m.
