NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) - Geraldine Carmouche, 58, was struck and killed by a float Wednesday (Feb.19) night during the NYX parade.

Captain for the Krewe of NYX, Julie Lea released a statement saying,

“On such a joyous night, this is obviously a tragic occurrence. The parade takes a backseat when something like this happens on the route. On behalf of the entire Krewe of NYX. Along with the City of New Orleans, we offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual involved.”

Krewe of Nyx also released a statement saying,

“We are devastated over the tragic event last night that resulted in the death of a relative of two Nyx sisters. Our board is having an emergency meeting right now to discuss how to move forward. We have received a lot of questions about the decision to cancel the second half of the parade. That decision, which we supported, was the city’s alone and it was made under a unique and tragic set of circumstances. As we continue to process what happened Wednesday night, we ask that you continue to keep the family and friends of Geraldine Carmouche in your prayers.”

The first 20 floats continued to roll and band and marching units were diverted to an alternate route. All floats after float 21 did not roll.

Flowers have been placed by the scene of the incident.
