NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) -The Archdiocese of New Orleans announced Monday the removal of a Metairie deacon from ministry.
The removal of Deacon V.M. Wheeler comes after allegations of abuse two decades ago.
The archdiocese released a statement saying, “Archbishop Gregory Aymond formally removed Deacon V.M. Wheeler from ministry based on an allegation of abuse that occurred 20 years ago before he was ordained a deacon. The formal allegation of abuse was reported to the officials of the Archdiocese of New Orleans within the last week. Wheeler has been assigned to St. Francis Xavier Parish since his ordination in 2018. This matter has been referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency, and the archdiocese pledges its full cooperation into this investigation.
A spokesperson with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says they are currently investigating the allegations.
Anyone with any further information or who needs to report an allegation should contact the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Again, the Archdiocese of New Orleans encourages anyone with allegations of sexual abuse of minor to contact the Victims Assistance Coordinator at 504-861-6253.”
