NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A decision on the bond of Cardell Hayes, accused killer of former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith, is expected to be made next week on Thurs., March 11 after a judge’s ruling at a court hearing today.
It was an emotional day as the wife of the former NFL player, Racquel Smith, spoke during the hearing. She was in tears as she recalled the incident that occurred on Camp Street six years ago. She begged the judge not to release Hayes, saying that she has been harassed during the ongoing legal process and that she fears for her family.
Additionally, Hayes is also accused of injuring Smith’s wife as a result of the traffic crash and argument that preceded the fatal encounter.
Hayes’ lawyer wants him to be released as he awaits a new trial.
The hearing was granted after the U.S. Supreme Court vacated Hayes’ manslaughter conviction due to the fact that the jury in the original trial was not unanimous in his conviction, which is now ruled unconstitutional.
