Man dead after pulling gun on deputies

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One man is dead after officials say he pointed a gun at deputies twice during an hours-long ordeal Saturday night in Metairie.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened in the 6500 block of Park Manor Drive on Saturday, April 10.

JPSO says deputies responded to a 911 call around 6:40 p.m.

Deputies say the complainant stated that she confronted her boyfriend, identified as 30-year-old Joshua Mitchell, about sexually abusing a child. She told deputies that Mitchell admitted to the sexual abuse and then threatened to kill the complainant. She warned deputies that Mitchell was armed and had a history of confrontations with law enforcement.

After 9 p.m. he emerged and pointed a gun at the deputies. At least one deputy fired at the suspect, who went back inside.

The man came out of the apartment a second time, again reportedly pointing a gun at the responding deputies, who fired again.

Around 10:30 p.m. a Crisis Management Unit breached the door of the apartment in an attempt to make contact with the man again. Deputies entered the apartment and found the man dead. Officials say a firearm was recovered from the immediate vicinity of the man.

An investigation is underway.
