BRPD corporal dies after overseas deployment

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge police officer has died while on an overseas military deployment.

Corporal Casey Hart was a member of the Baton Rouge Police Department for 14 years.

Hart was on an overseas deployment with the United States Army when he went into a cardiac arrest while running last month.

He was transferred to a hospital in Germany and then to Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland where he died Tuesday.

A GoFundMe page set up to help pay for his medical care raised more than $20,000.Hart leaves behind a wife and young daughter.

The National Police Wives Association posted a message about Hart’s passing along with a touching photo of him and his daughter.

“It is with great sadness that I must report that we lost a hero,” the post said. “Cpl. Casey Hart who was active duty military and a Baton Rouge Police Officer passed away at Walter Reid Hospital this (Tuesday) morning. He leaves behind a wife and daughter. Casey was loved by so many and especially those who served beside him. We are asking for prayers for this family as they make their journey back home to Louisiana.”

“The men and women of the Baton Rouge Police Department are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Corporal Casey Hart,” said BRPD Cheif Murphy Paul. “Corporal Hart is a 14-year veteran of the police department and was assigned as a Uniformed Patrol Officer at 3rd District. As a dedicated member of the United States Army National Guard, he not only served our community, but he served our country honorably for many years. Corporal Hart passed away yesterday due an illness while on deployment with the National Guard. We extend our deepest sympathy to Corporal Hart’s friends and family, especially his wife, Keri, his daughter, and all those he touched through his life and service.”

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome issued the following statement Wednesday:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of one of our finest. Yesterday, Corporal Casey Hart, who served the citizens of our community as a Baton Rouge Police Officer for over 14 years, succumbed to an illness while on deployment with the National Guard.

Corporal Hart was assigned as a Uniformed Patrol Officer at BRPD’s 3rd District. As a member of the National Guard for 24 years, he rose to the rank of First Sergeant.

I want to join the men and women of the Baton Rouge Police Department in recognizing Corporal Hart’s tireless dedication to the Department, our city and our country. His life represents a life lived in service to others, and I extend my condolences to Corporal Hart’s wife, Keri, his daughter, Taylen, and all his friends and family.”
