NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One man is dead after a truck crashed into a canal in Metairie, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto says the crash happened around 3:50 a.m. near the intersection of W. Esplanade and Ridgeway.

The driver, identified as 31-year-old Kenneth Buckman of Metairie, was still inside the Nissan pickup truck when deputies arrived. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officials determined his cause of death to be drowning.

Video surveillance shows the truck failing to turn west onto W. Esplanade, striking the curb and continuing into the canal, Lopinto says.

Buckman’s condition prior to the crash is unknown at this time.
