NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A New Orleans man who originally claimed to have killed another man in self-defense was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder, police say.

According to the Kenner Police Department, Darrin Smith, 32, shot and killed Devin Bornes, 27, as he left the Mazaj Cafe on Georgia Avenue on March 27 just after 3 a.m.

Smith originally told police the shooting was in self-defense.

Kenner police say cell phone video contradicts Smith’s statement. In the video, Smith and Bornes are seen arguing in a parking lot during a physical altercation. Both Smith and Borne appear to draw weapons. Bornes is seen taking several steps back and away from Smith, at which time Smith pursues Bornes, moves past two people trying to hold him back, then shoots Bornes.

Bornes was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died Friday when he was removed from life support.
