Shots fired at old Naval Base, no injuries

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The NOPD is investigating reports of shots fired in the 4400 block of Dauphine Street at the old Naval Base.

Police responded to several calls of gunshots coming from the old Naval Base Tuesday night (June 14).

According to witness Troy Moore, he says he called 911 several times.

“I investigated a little bit more, I could hear it and I could see people walking across the roof,” he said.

Police blocked off Poland Avenue in the Bywater late into the evening hours, surveying the scene and investigating. Moore says he’s thankful no one was injured from the gunfire, but enough is enough.

“I hope they don’t aim over here I hope they don’t aim over here. I hope nobody gets hit by falling gunshots. Always something going on. Vagrants, there was a dead body, fires, it’s just sad it needs to be secured.”

The old Naval Base is two blocks from Eric Jensen’s Brewery. He says the activity at the property is detrimental to his business and the community.

“It’s just really disheartening. We have a lot of families that come here. Our employees some of which live in the neighborhood right by the Naval base. So my first thought is being concerned for the safety of both our staff and our regulars that live in the neighborhood,” Jensen said.

He’s hopeful that one day the multi-storied, one million squared foot property will be transformed into something positive in the Bywater.

NOPD says they have no victims or suspects connected to this incident and no arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for the NOPD could not confirm whether the gunshots came from individuals living inside the abandoned building.
