Local pools participate in swimming lesson record attempt
New Orleans, La. - The Thursday morning swim at Stallings Playground in Gentilly was cool on many levels.
Area kids dove in to an effort to help break the Guinness world record for the world's largest swimming lesson.
Children here paddled in the pool along with thousands of kids like them around the world.
The record-setting attempt is part of an effort to spread the word that swimming lessons save lives.
Alison Boumeester, Aquatics Manager for the American Red Cross in New Orleans says "Last year we had around 20 thousand participants around the world doing the exact same lesson at the exact same time."
According to the American Red Cross, drowning is the second leading cause of unintended death due to injury in children between 1 and 14 years of age.
The Red Cross offers swimming lessons at 12 NORDC pools around the city.
The lessons are free and available to children and adults.
