Metairie, La. - Louisiana State Police say a woman trying to run away from a man who was beating her was struck by two cars and killed on Interstate 10 near Veterans Boulevard.

Police were already responding to two 9-1-1 calls Sunday night reporting that a man was hitting a woman on the shoulder of the Interstate. But before troopers arrived, 35-year-old Lucretia Hampton of St. Bernard Parish had been struck by two cars and killed.

Investigators say Hampton was driving an SUV and stopped on the shoulder because her passenger, George Washington Cummings was hitting her. They say as the altercation escalated, Hampton tried to get away from Cummings. She ran down the shoulder in an attempt to flag down cars to help her. When she ran onto the Interstate, she was struck first by a pick-up truck and then by a Chevrolet Tahoe. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police took Cummings into custody and booked the 39-year-old New Orleans man with 2nd Degree Battery and Manslaughter.
