Bayou Corne, La. - People who live near a giant sinkhole in Assumption Parish must decide whether they want gas monitors inside their homes.

The Louisiana Office of Conservation believes the equipment will help reduce the risk of exposure to natural gas at the sinkhole site.

The office has directed Texas Brine Co. to install monitors and ventilation systems to detect methane accumulating in enclosed spaces inside slab foundation homes. Homeowners must give permission to Texas Brine Co. to conduct the work.

The state Texas Brine Co. responsible for the sinkhole. The company operated an underground salt cavern which has been linked to the problem.
