Westwego woman critically injured in violent pit bull attack

Westwego, La. - A Westwego woman is in critical condition after being mauled by three pit bulls Wednesday.

Westwego Police Chief Dwayne Munch said three of the woman's four pit bulls attacked her inside her home in the 300 block of Avenue A.  The woman's neighbors heard her screaming and called 911 to report that a woman was being attacked.

Officers arrived at the home and witnessed the dogs attacking the woman. One officer shot and killed one of the dogs as it charged at them when they opened the door.  A second pit bull was also killed as it attempted to lunge at officers.

The officers then shot the third dog mauling the woman. A fourth dog was also in the home. Officers were able to drag the woman out to the front porch, Munch said.

Animal control personnel was also on scene and took possession of the dead animals. Munch said one of the dogs recently had puppies and that may have been a factor in the vicious attack.

The woman has serious injuries to her torso and arms. She underwent surgery Thursday to repair damage to her scalp.

"It's the worst dog bite I've ever seen in 25 years of police work," said Munch.
