Hospice nurse arrested for stealing medication from deceased patient
New Orleans, La. - Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Deputies arrested a hospice nurse for stealing medication from a deceased patient. William Carl Simm Jr., 65, of Thibodaux was taken into custody and charged with theft of a control dangerous substance II.
Police say that in April 2013, the family of a hospice patient filed a report with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office regarding the theft of the patient's medication. Investigators learned that when the patient passed away, there was a hospice nurse present with the family. Shortly thereafter, a second hospice nurse, identified as Simm, arrived on scene and asked about the medication. A family member told police that they witnessed Simm taking the medication (morphine, oxycodone and hydrocodone), putting it in his pocket and leaving the residence.
When contacted by telephone, Simm told investigators that he was working out of state and won't be back for a while. On Tuesday, Simm went to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office to meet with investigators. During questioning, Simm denied taking the medication, but eventually confessed to the crime.
Simm was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail where he remains on a $15,000 bond.
