NOPD makes arrest in Mardi Gras day murder
New Orleans, La. - New Orleans homicide detectives have arrested the man they believe shot and killed another local man in the 7th Ward on Mardi Gras day.
Investigators say evidence indicates that 24-year-old Devin Waterhouse gunned down 22-year-old Kiran Harris in the 1800-block of Laharpe Street at 6:15 p.m. on February 12. Harris was shot in the head and died at the scene.
Detectives took Waterhouse into custody Friday when he reported to the Weekend Warriors program at Orleans Parish Prison. Waterhouse was ordered by a municipal court to participate in the program after recently being convicted of carrying a concealed weapon. The program orders offenders like Waterhouse to report to prison every Friday, where they remain incarcerated until Sunday.
Waterhouse was previously arrested for illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, battery and disturbing the peace.
"I appreciate the work of Homicide Detective Theo Kent, who stayed on this case until he gathered the information necessary to make this arrest," said Superintendent Ronal Serpas said in a news release. "Every homicide is taken very seriously by our detectives, and their perseverance to try to see that justice is served is making a difference in New Orleans."
