Head-on crash kills 3 in St. John Parish
VACHERIE, La. - Three people were killed and one was seriously injured Tuesday morning after an 18-wheeler crossed the center line of a highway and struck two cars.
Investigators said an 18-wheeler driven by Damion Robinson, 43, of Boutte, was traveling north on LA 3127 near LA 3213, when for unknown reasons it crossed the center line of LA 3127 and entered the southbound lane. It then sideswiped a truck driven by Chad Hebert, 45, of Chackbay.
A car that was traveling south behind the truck tried to avoid the accident by traveling onto the southbound shoulder. It was struck head-on by the 18-wheeler, killing the car's driver and his two passengers. The deceased are identified as Saul Montoya, 42, of Prairieville; Lucio Hernandez-Gelindo, 45, of Prairieville; and Horacio Cordero-Marquez, 34, of Baton Rouge.
Hebert was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries. Robinson was not injured in the crash. All the individuals involved were wearing their seat belts except Cordero-Marquez.
Robinson submitted to a breath test, and alcohol was eliminated as a factor in the crash. He was booked into the St. John Parish Jail with four counts of negligent vehicular injuring. The charges will be reviewed and possibly upgraded.
This crash remains under investigation.
